SEGMENT 5- THE FOLLOWING TAKES PLACE ONE CENTICYCLE PRE-CATACLYSM
U-Mos and A-Kul examined the fallen creature. Neither expressed sympathy (the creature had attempted to prey upon them; why should they pity it?) but rather they were simply interested.
"Come on, neophytes," said Z-Kul.
"Coming," said A-Kul. U-Mos took one more look at the grenchler and pulled off its horn before His adopted mother and sister could see. He stowed it in a cavity in the back of his exoskeleton and then ran to catch up. After a moment he was able to catch up to and match pace with A-Kul. She gave him a sideways glance as only a sibling can and smiled slyly, then accelerated.
"No wings," she said quietly, setting the rules of the race.
U-Most nodded and leaped over a fallen tree. A-Kul, twenty paces ahead, grabbed a branch and swung under it. Z-Kul kept a distance ahead of them, watching the area for more grenchlers. She was significantly faster than her neophytes but did not keep to far ahead.
Even on foot, the Luminoth were agile. Luminoth scientists suggested that their most ancient ancestors may have lacked wings and as a result the Luminoth had developed their long and stick-like limbs.
Inside his exoskeleton, U-Mos' hearts beat wildly at three hundred beats a minute. Tendons inside the joints of his exoskeleton contracted to make him move. Tiny hair like feelers on his carapace gauged scent and temperature while the antennae on his head listened for any sounds. It was so tempting for him to open his wings and zip forward, but a sense of honor kept him from doing so.
"We're here," Z-Kul said as they pulled out into a massive clearing. A-Kul and U-Mos dug their heels into the spongy moss on the ground and looked around. There were thirty or so Luminoth in the clearing- most of whom were simply hanging out. "Just wait around here. I might be a while with A-Voc. Don't you have a few friends from school who live here?"
"Yes, M-Dhe and J-Fme-" Said U-Mos, just in time for Z-Kul to take to the air and fly towards the raised temple.
"Someone say my name?"
A-Kul and U-Mos turned to look at M-Dhe. He was about three cycles older than they were, and almost ten feet tall. His most noticeable feature, however, was his gray eyes. Since the time of his birth, M-Dhe had been blind. However, he'd made it through school and training using his antennae alone. M-Dhe was the kind of person who was everyone's friend.
"It's A-Kul and U-Mos," A-Kul said.
"A'? U'?" M-Dhe said, turning to neither (there was no point). "It's been quite some time, friends! I'd always wondered what you looked like!"
"What?"
"Look," he said, parting the dense feelers on his chestplate. He showed a complex looking metal device that appeared to be screwed to the exoskeleton. "It's a prototype for a 'sonic visor.' It lets me see using sound- I have three-sixty vision now."
U-Mos made clicked in amazement. "Wouldn't a visor go over your eyes?"
M-Dhe frowned slightly. "Well, the one for those of you who can see will go over the eyes and the readout will show like a computer screen. Mine is wired into my exoskeleton and transmits to my brain. A-Voc was the one who suggested that I test it, and O-Lir installed it himself. But enough of me. How have you-"
"M'! M'!"
M-Dhe didn't turn.
"What, J'?" He said.
U-Mos and A-Kul waved to J-Fme, a former classmate who was M-Dhe's best friend.
"The egg sac hatched-" he said excitedly to M-Dhe. Then, to the others, "Do you want to see something amazing?"
"Always," said A-Kul with a hum in her voice.
I tried to show, here, how the sonic visor (that Samus uses in the game) was first invented and why. Furthermore, there WAS a luminoth body in the game that, when scanned, describes a sort of permanent sonic visor that let him see. He's in the area with the dark burst, if you're wondering.
I'm also introducing two future members of A-Kul's keybearers. In the game, A-Kul calls M-Dhe "Fearless" and J-Fme "Mighty."

Names and terms you'd only know if you'd played the game=
The Cataclysm= You'd only know this if you played the game and I don't want to spoil it.
Luminoth= The 'Moth' people who inhabit the planet Aether. They are extremely tall and thin. They have psionic abilities. They used to be wanderers in space but found Aether. Its beauty was so great they forsook the stars forever to live on its surface. An example: [link]
Aether= A planet the luminoth claimed as their own many years ago. It is slightly smaller than earth and has less oceans and more land. Many of its natural organisms are predatory but most do not attack the luminoth.
Light of Aether= The source of the planet's energy. It is vital to Luminoth society.
Sentinal= Luminoth assigned to protect and serve an area of Aether or the whole planet.
Temple= Location of an energy controller that houses some of the Light of Aether. There is one in each area of Aether with Luminoth inhabitants.
Temple Grounds= The main area inhabited by Luminoth and is at the center. It is a rocky place and is home to the biggest Temple where the Sentinel of Aether, J-Gnk, inhabits.
Agon Plains= A grassy and tranquil place. Its Sentinel is I-Sha. After the Cataclysm, Agon Plains will become known as Agon Wastes.
Torvus Forest= A forest with many inhabitants; Luminoth or otherwise. It is situated near a massive lake. The sentinel is A-Voc. After the Cataclysm, The forest mixes with the lake and will become known as Torvus Bog.
Neophyte= Luminoth child.
Cycle= A year
Decacycle= ten years
Centicycle= One hundred years
Z-Kul= Main character, "Champion of Aether." The only character I made up, you may not use the name or the character. She is the foremost warrior on Aether and is training her daughter and adopted son to be warriors. Lately she has been having bad nightmares.
A-Kul= Z-Kul's daughter and student. [link]
U-Mos= Z-Kul's adopted son and student.
