SEGMENT 8- THE FOLLOWING TAKES PLACE ONE CENTICYCLE PRE-CATACLYSM
I hadn't seen a chyyka in ages. I swooped low over the surface and left a mist behind me. A-Voc was quicker, levitating herself rather than flapping her wings. I was jealous, to be honest, but I did not dwell on the thought. I loaded my weapon and cocked it.
A-Voc fired a round from her weapon into the water. In a few moments, mandibles came out and snapped at us.
"It's aggressive," A-Voc called to me. "We need to move it to the bog in the west."
"Are you kidding me?" I yelled. The chyyka was a massive, slug-like organism the size of a whale with a blunted, eye-less head. I knew that its tongue was rather elastic and could grab play. For now, I was sure that it would chase after us since A-Voc had provoked it. How on Aether were we meant to get it into another body of water until it was an adult? "We can't! There are only two of us- it would take hundreds of Luminoth to lift the larvae-"
"No," she called back like it was nothing.
"It's huge!"
"Just wait until it breaches," said A-Voc ominously. "Anytime now."
As if on cue, the chyyka leaped out of the water and, rather than falling, sailed into the sky. A-Voc's hands were out like a puppeteer as she guided the chyyka over the stone barrier between the lake and the bog. It twisted in confusion and panic, but after it plunged into the bog, it seemed happy. Beneath the surface, I saw it suck an entire pack of hydlings.
I stood on the stone with A-Voc and we watched the chyyka swim placidly.
My friend sighed. "I'm glad none of the neophytes were injured. I'm sure the chyyka would have attacked M-Dhe if he'd sent out a sonic wave."
"Do you think...?"
"Oh, I'm sure." She said. "They're hypersensitive to sound."
"It's a good thing you stopped him when you did."
She nodded. Then, "We should go back to the neophytes... and besides, I need to tell the people of Torvus to steer clear of the bog until that thing matures and flies off. They weren't supposed to be around here, either, but my order never stops the fearless M-Dhe," she laughed.
I laughed, too, which surprised me.
"Of all the neophytes in Torvus, I think I know him the best," she went on. "He and his friends, they get into all kinds of trouble... but... Z-Kul, I wanted to reccomend him to you as a warrior. J-Fme as well. They may not seem it, but they are some of the best trainees in all of Torvus."
I nodded. "A-Voc, I've been meaning to tell you that it is my intention to retire when A-Kul is old enough to be appointed champion. I expect that U-Mos will train under J-Gnk for a while to become the Sentinel of Aether like our dear friend V-Mos." I sighed, slouching a bit in a way that was very unlike me.
My friend put a hand on my shoulder. "I know you have more you wish to share about your dream."
I nodded.
"Tell me."
I was reluctant, but I faced her and said boldly, "I saw you die."
Her green eyes grew wide, but she did not respond otherwise except to say, "please continue."
